#188 > DEC 14th 2006 - new issue on line every Thursday afternoon |
|
| Mouth
still still agape....whoooo told you it was a TORNADO! |
Who
shot what? Who crashed into who? Conspiracy? Where were you when it happened?
Who killed Bambi? Who shot Gene Serene down? See, told you there was a
tornado, you didn’t believe me did you? MC who? Where? Pretension? Yes,
that’s who it was, Reb blah blah blah. MC who? Exzzzzactly, Accrington
Stanley, never heard of him. Shot down by her own friends, who need enemies?
The head-peckers went too far this time, crashed in a tunnel and they say
the MC was driving. Yeap, it was the MC. The MC and the headpeckers, the
destroyers of all when it could and should have have been so good. Took
on the wrong ones this time Mr Rabbit. Da Da daaaaaaaaaaa, peck peck peck.
Who shot Pop Art? Never mind the bollocks, here’s the next moves. “Hey
there, Leave The Capital will be supporting People In Planes in Cardiff
on December 19th at The Coal Exchange”. Time to leave the capital. Last
Organ until the otherside? Last Organ radio show until? Indeed and we all
know the people involved. Peck peck peck, is there nothing left that’s
going to fill the holes that you’ve been digging. Richard Hamilton, Andy
Warhol your boys took a hell of a beating, stuck stuck stuckists... Hang
on what is this brilliant song? Stop everything, move to the next fix.
Hey, listen to this! This
is good, you have to hear this! Who is this, this rules, this is why we
do it, all the headpeckers in the world can’t shoot this down... Tasting
sweat and beautiful...

Open
message to you bands, labels and anyone else with a blog or a My Space
page or a webzine or who are generally out there getting involved in a
positive way and spreading the word about fine music and creativity and
underground/alternative art that go bump in the night. This is how it works
around here; we’re perfectly happy for you to cut and paste our reviews
and put them on your band/label pages or where ever you want, please please
do go spread the word, that’s what this is about – the spreading of information.
We encourage you to do it (unless you’re involved in something that’s a
little unsavoury like one bunch of nasty little right wing scumbags we
had a run in with a few weeks ago), There’s no ego here, we’re not going
to come chasing you about copyright and all that crap. All we ask you to
do is credit the material and add links to our pages with anything you
want to use. Please feel free to use our words to spread the word, it’s
how it works – word word word it’s basic netiquette, it’s weblove and only
a massive ego-inflated no-mark would think any other way. Use our words,
we take it as a massive compliment – please do add the link though, please
tell people where you got it from and cut 'n paste away (like many others
have already done), the more people who read about these bands and things
the better don’t yer think? It’s the underground way. |

MORRICONE
TO GET OSCAR - Ennio Morricone, the composer most famous for providing
film scores for the likes of 'The Good, The Bad And The Ugly', and 'Cinema
Paradiso', is to receive an honorary Oscar when the Academy Of Motion Picture
Arts And Sciences holds its annual ceremony on 25 Feb next year. Morricone,
who has composed more than 300 scores during the course of his forty five
year career, has received five previous Academy Award nominations - for
1978's 'Days Of Heaven', 1986's 'The Mission', 1987's 'The Untouchables,
1991's 'Bugsy' and 2000's 'Malena' - but never actually won the Oscar,
which seems like something of an oversight, really. Anyway, the Academy
are apparently ready to address that oversight with the honorary award
recognising "his magnificent and multi-faceted contributions to the art
of film music". Academy president Sid Ganis said: "The board was responding
not just to the remarkable number of scores that Mr. Morricone has produced,
but to the fact that so many of them are beloved and popular masterpieces."
THE
STOOGES are to release their comeback album at the end of March. It's to
be called 'The Weirdness', and will be the legendary band's first studio
album in more than 30 years.
ANTHRAX
are to have a double live CD released on January 22 by Universal Music
Catalogue. Called 'Caught In A Mosh - BBC Live In Concert', one CD features
the band's performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on February 15,
1987, while the other was recorded during the band's Monsters Of Rock Festival
set at Donington on August 22, 1987.

The new year long series
of
ORGAN TV is on your screens
in the UK right now. Every Wednesday evening, 10.30pm
on the OPEN ACCESS 2 Channel on SKY
173. And now due to the
fine response, repeated every Sunday on SKY 883 at 11.30pm.
What's it all about? Simple,
just good music, and the art of good video making... Same musical
policy as we've always had with Organ - the labels are just handy signposts,
as long as the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy
eye/earboiling mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post
man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity
for the open minded
(and if you think your video
should be on then shout in our direction)

DEMO TIME |
| Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos,
we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more
time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective,
when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
MAYORS
OF MIYAZAKI – Kancho – Whooooo, we trawl through and through, throwing
on new CD after new CD, not really looking at the cover or all the blurb
and accompanying hype, waiting for the music to grab us. Most of the time
the music doesn’t, most of the time we just politely pass by and move on
to the next in the ever demanding pile. We dive in knowing full well that
the trawl will be worth it and it may take another sixteen duds before
something demands our words - we know the potential treasures are there
waiting. The Mayors are yet another band from Cardiff, they left the capital
(subliminal advertising, the new Leave The Capital single is out in Jan)
and moved to London in search of those paved streets of gold. The Mayors
have the gold already, they just hit us with five instantly demanding tracks;
it’s that bendy shouty pointy churning thing that much loved bands like
Muy Feo or Mariachi (I see they’re back) or Scissormen or Homage Freaks
did. Some wired kind of urgent math rock that doesn’t quite add up – I
like it when the math doesn’t quite add up. Hardboiled yet easy to lock
in to, we got one here, oh yes, more top grade Organ fuel. Five clever
demanding slightly abrasive, not too abrasive, their hardboiled edgy musical
awkwardness is not difficult to swallow. Nice artwork too. Five tracks,
each and every one a favourite, I can’t choose. Well recorded, well played,
well well well – I think you’ll be hearing a lot more from us about the
Mayors Of Miyazaki in 2007 – don’t wait until then though, I see they have
some MP3s that you can download and this fine CD is well worth sending
off some of you hard earned money for. The Mayors are the sound that
enters your head when you look at those overcrowded phone line masts where
all the conversations jump in to one and fend off the pointy riffs and
the thrilling undercurrents. We like this lots, you will tooooooooo...

KUTOSIS
– Control Control - Well I wasn’t that impressed until the last of the
three tracks came crashing in through the door pushing the other two polite
things spiralling and scratching out of the way with some wired up (s)punk
rock spit’n polish urgency and do-you-see-me attitude that’s obviously
been feasting on the corpse of 1978 Buzzcocks. So why the hell were the
first two tracks so polite and sounding more like a bunch of Manic Street
preacher’s fans on a day off from music college? Why is that second
track, 79, so safe and pedestrian and punk-by-numbers boring? One and a
half out of three ain’t bad, we’ll see, we’re almost impressed now. They’re
from Cardiff, not bad, we expect better next time. www.myspace.com/kutosis
FADE
TO SEPIA - Well I wasn’t that impressed until the second track came crashing
and jack-boot stomping through the door, pushing the first polite thing
spiralling and scratching out of the way with some wired up (s)punk rock
spit’n agit urgency and all angular new wave defiance a la ‘79. And really
if you’re going to rip off the Gang of Four then this is how to do it properly,
sounds like Mark E. Smith coming to town (and never wearing a frown). Stark
and wired and agit-stomping and demanding attention, forget the opening
track the other three are rather fine in a Joy Division, Bloc Party, Fall
kind of way. Like some kind of communist block band you’d hear on
John Peel back in the day. Well worth your time and mouse action - www.myspace.com/fadetosepia

ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK…… |
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
FUCKED
UP – Hidden World (Jade Tree) – They’re from Toronto Canada and they know
how to motor right at your head (in more ways than one). Oh yea, they gloriously
live up to their name in the finest of negatively positive ways - what
a beautiful bunch of “miscreants, operating outside the parameters of traditional
society” (I ripped that bit off from their press release), beautiful people,
my type of people, head-messing punk rock, glorious challenging in your
face punk rock, intelligent musical violence, this is indeed the musical
shit. Now where were we? “No one in the band owns a cell phone or can operate
a vehicle...” They throw up all kinds of political contradictions, left
wing anarcho manipulation of fascist imagery (or is it?), chaotic letting
off of mind-bombs, more questions than answers? anipulation, self manipulation,
media manipulation, deliberate confusion. Building bridges then blowing
them up. Pushing buttons, crusading, just who are these people are how
F’ed up are they? What a beautiful proclamation, a “culture of confusion”.
Melodic aggression, raw and violent, enigmatic structures, deliberate misinformation
designed to provoke thought via the medium of punk rock, dangerous and
delicious, disparaging alienation – just how punk rock really should be
(and they sound brilliant as well), beautifully Crass? Some vital, proper,
real, questioning, challenging, important punk rock www.jadetree.com

IRVING
– Death In The Garden, Blood On The Flowers (Eenie Meenie) – Classy, refined
inspiring uplifting alternative indie pop, the sort you don’t hear that
much anymore. Lush and orchestrated and kind of Echo And The Bunnymen in
terms of intelligence and quality - no, more psychedelic and American than
the Bunnymen. I don’t know much about Irving, this is their first UK release,
seems they’ve been about the US indie scene for some seven or so years
now. I don’t know much about Irvine but hey, I do know I like them – I
like them like I like The Bunnymen or the rewarding psych-pop edge of The
Church. I like the breezy shiny happy bits (with the undercurrents), the
bits that make me think fondly of Remy Zero or those Elevator Drops or
The Lilys. Not that the very refreshing Irving sound like anyone else,
nothing is that obvious here, the namedrops are just vague signposts. Extremely
fine breezy positive music (fine artwork too). Just a very fine uplifting
refined inviting warm positive alternative indie-pop band who really make
you feel good, what more could you want? Out in the UK via Cargo distribution
on Jan 15th. www.thebandirving.com
/ www.eeniemeanie.com / www.cargorecords.co.uk
– oh and watch out for their videos on Organ TV in January.
COAXIAL
– Coaxial (Gold Standard Laboratories) Whooooooops, almost let this one
go by, it came out here in the UK back in October, better late then never
and far far too good to let it go by without a mention. From Long Beach
California with some kind of crossover spoken word hip-hop that isn’t obvious
enough to ever be pinned down and pigeonholed like that. Kind of darkwave
hip hop, moody and dark in a kind of Eminem/Free Moral Agents way. Haunting
beats and DJ Shadow flavours and refine textures and a strange as this
may seem, think Eminem fronting Terminal Cheesecake (two forms sharing
a common axis) – yes that good! Unpredictable, stream of consciousness,
introspective mystery. Apparently the previous release featured appearances
from members of The Mars Volta, that fact along with the post-rock textures
of tracks like The Collapse of Polaris will give you more than an idea
as to why you need to make the effort to check this highly recommended
album out. www.myspace.com/goldstandardlabratories

Recently
reunited seminal grindcore / extreme metal outfit BRUTAL TRUTH have
announced forthcoming UK and Japanese Tours as well as select festival
dates.
After two very well received
performances at this year’s Chicago Electric City Rockfest and Brave Words
& Bloody Knuckles 6-Pack Weekend IV, BRUTAL TRUTH has expanded their
touring plans to include tours of the United Kingdom and Japan in addition
to the previously announced headlining position at the 2007 Maryland Death
Fest. Additionally, the band will headline the third annual Los Angeles
Murderfest in March. A complete listing of tour dates and festival information
can be found below.
The band’s U.K. tour,
(sponsored by our friends over at Terrorizer Magazine) will begin early
February and include support from NARCOSIS and TOTAL F*CKING DESTRUCTION.
BRUTAL TRUTH bassist Dan
Lilker comments: "The grind freaks in the U.K. have always been very good
to Brutal Truth, which makes sense since it is the area that put grindcore
on the map in the first place. We can't wait to get over there and destroy,
so get ready for some sonic mayhem!"
BRUTAL TRUTH will then head
to Japan in early March headlining Extreme The Dojo Tour
Vol. 17 with support from
Poland’s VADER.
BRUTAL TRUTH has recently
seen the reissue of their heralded 1997 masterpiece Sounds
of the Animal Kingdom. The
re-mastered and repackaged version comes complete with the
preceding Kill Trend Suicide
mini-CD (1996), bonus video footage in the form of the band?s
'Dead Smart' video, extensive
and exhaustive liner notes from the band, and a forward from
Choosing Death author Albert
Mudrian.
