| Thou
shall not read the NME, Thou shall not make some noise for Detroit |
Who?
It’s meretricious balderdash and everyone knows you can’t generalize, Just
how many weeks have those same jeans been on now, such average jeans as
well, no, we’re not impressed with the view from over here, thou shall
never change your jeans, thou shall not read the NME. The doomsday clock
has been move two minutes forward this week, we blame The View and their
serial wearing of filthy dirty stinking festering clothes, only four days?
Mummy’s boys. Thou shall not pimp my ride, Thou shall not go off and things,
thou shall not take zines for granted, thou shall not take meretricious
balderdash for granted, and my alarm clock it ain’t working, but that’s
no bad thing ‘cause it kept waking me up, beep beep beep get on your feet.
Another week’s worth of what we’ve been listening toooooo and eating and
looking at and all linked up so you don’t have to take our word for it. |

IS THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME? |
SPIRITWO
has her debut single out on ORG on FEBRUARY 19th
Part 29 of the ever evolving
ORG-AN-ISED
SINGLES SERIES, hot on the tail of January’s LEAVE THE CAPITAL
single. February’s release is a rather delicious left-field four tracker
from SPIRITWO
You may recognize the lead
track Foundling, Spiritwo’s rather warm version of the much loved CARDIACS
classic, indeed that second track might be bugging you just a little, a
rather different interpretation of SEPULTURA’s Inner Self (the band
love it, there’s been talk of a collaboration, Spiritwo knows her metal,
she’ll argue with you for hours over the merits of Carcass and Kreator).
The other two tracks here are Spiritwo originals, a taste of her rather
lush debut album, I think I like her originals more that her rather unique
covers.
Who is she (or are Spiritwo
a band?) She has a big big underground following, shows in performance
art venues, gay clubs where hoards of cross-dressing Spiritwo lookalikes
in big wigs and high heels mob her
The four track CD, part 29
of the ORG-AN-ISED SINGLES SERIES brought to you by ORG Records and ORGAN
zine, is out on FEB 19th. Part 30 is on the way, first week of March, it's
going to be a good one

just good music, and the art of good video making... Same musical
policy as we've always had with Organ - the labels are just handy signposts,
as long as the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy
eye/earboiling mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post
man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity
for the open minded

DEMO TIME |
Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos,
we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more
time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective,
when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
ALSATIAN
- Five fine shots, bark bark bark, on your guard, they’ll bite you
if you don’t pay proper attention. Jerky and pointy and a delicious rush
of frantic energy with that rather fine first track “You Only Say I Love
You When You’re Drunk”, frantic energy all the way actually, they kept
the standards all the way through - all thrill, no filler. OK, smart-ass
time, three northern English arctic monkeys who do that scratchy indie/punky/blues
edged Mission Of Burma/Blues Explosion frantic thing rather well. They’re
from the smogmonster lands of Middlesborough and they’re dealing out lo-fi
indie-punk drenched in dirty filthy keyboards and a healthy get in the
van attitude. Plenty of stomp and White Stripes and Von Bondies and yes,
Arctic Monkeys/Little Man Tate and losing three stone means the girls won’t
leave them alone and their band maybe bigger than your band any day now.
My riff is bigger than your riff and this is good. Five franticly urgent
(did we say Frantic too many times?) infectious have-a-go-hero songs -
we like, we like, we do indeed like. I ain’t no abacus but you can count
on me (and words I steal off of Jamie T), we like Alsatian, they’re frantic
(did we say that?). www.myspace.com/alsatianband
DEMO
OF THE WEEK 2
THE
VIPERS – The Vipers are from Manchester and sounding like they couldn't
give a flying toad about the latest sound or trend. The Vipers are from
Manchester and sound like they could accidentally without ever trying,
be the latest sound or trend. To label the sound (they argue) would be
to kill it, so we won’t mention their ‘blend of teenage b-movie slashfest
rock n’ roll’ that’s there for all who dare to be converted. They’ve got
the stomp of classic 60’s/70’s garage punk and I’m sure there’s a healthy
slice of Manc swagger and suss in there with thier Stooged up Wire and
vitriolic Cramp bite. A bite that you won’t want to pass on the stairs
without a care. The Vipers are intense and if The Smiths really had sounded
a little more like Morrisey’s beloved New York Dolls... The Vipers are
a breath of freshness in the ashtray air, they’re lean and mean and stripped
down keen, they know they’re good, they have the attitude and despite the
names we dropped and things we just said they’re no backward looking swipe
of nostalgia. www.myspace.com/thevipersuk

QUARTANTINE
– Some kind of messy out of focus hardcore punk band who aren’t quite sure
if they want to be a metal band or take on a ska edge or if they want to
flavour it with a side serving of grunge or indeed alt.rock. The result
us a bit of an unfocused mishmash, an undercooked stew with too many ingredients,
right now they’ve gone all ’77 punk rock and a little more Norman Wisdom
than Johnny Rotton (Gog Magog!), hang on they’ve gone all nu metal on us
now, no, hang on, ska again. A mess is what it is, but hey, there is a
potentially good band trying to fight through, and they are trying to do
something, they clearly have some kind of ambition. Not ready yet, worth
watching though, worth waiting to see if they can get a bit of focus in
there and come out of their mess with something worth us shouting about,
we shall wait and see what they do next, could turn out to be rather good,
then again, might not.... They’re from Plymouth and shock of shocks, they
have a My Space page – www.myspace.com/quarentine69

ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK…… |
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
BLACK
ELK – Black Elk (Crucial Blast) – The eponymous debut from Portland Oregon’s
Black Elk. ‘Majestic destructo rock’ (I got that from their sparse biog),
a sludge fest of (post) hardcore punk, progressive metal, monster riffs
and violent meaty twitchy noise. A psychotic goatheaded backwoods black
mass of Melvins abrasion, Karp tension and the kind of filthy noise Amphetamine
Reptile served up back there in their best days. Crucial Blast are turning
out to be one of the crucial labels, up there with AmRep now – The Mass,
So I Had To Shoot Him, Microwaves, a label that never lets us down. Black
Elk are twisting and turning and swiping and lashing, intricate, tough,
brutal, delicate, sharp, violent, ten slices of clever crunch. This is
for Jesus Lizard fans who like their math laced with muscle-bound riffage,
riffs so big they evoke the early violence of Huge Baby in there with their
Black Flag attitude and Melvins suss – ah the excellently named Black Elk
have the lot and they put it together so well, this is seriously seriously
heavy, you have been warned, go get it. www.crucialblast.net

EXPLOSIONS
IN THE SKY - All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone (Bella Union) -
Art or craft? There's a sonic technique doing the rounds, so popular that
it's difficult to tell certain bands apart. Simple, sad/happy nursery-rhyme
chords on a six-time base, instrumental build-ups to big climaxes.
A great formula on the verge of being devalued - because it's becoming
just that, a formula. We are watching the fossilisation of a groundswell
movement into a genre. Any complaints are churlish however, churlish
because all these bands have merit in isolation; its just when you're in
the position to hear most of them that annoyance sets in.
The
new album from Explosions In The Sky is a difficult one. It's so beautifully
done. In fact, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone is spectacularly beautiful.
The playing is superbly delicate and sensitive, the arrangement and production
gorgeously rich and warm. The dynamics - what can you say? Dynamics
is what post-rock is all about, and Explosions In The Sky cannot be beaten
here. Hush and tempest, and - most importantly - so obviously performed
genuinely flowing from the heart. There's more: All Of A Sudden I
Miss Everyone has a foundation of powerful percussion lacking from their
army of imitators, adding to the depth and variety of the production.
Now, the churlish bit... sorry, but boy do you know what's coming next
all the time. There may be variety in the playing, the production and the
instrumentation, but it's built on a foundation of really similar melodies,
and always that looping six-eight time. Always that happy-tragic
resolution... too much of a good thing, in need of some kind of contrast,
some darkness, some other route to that high. Maybe its this (or
listening to Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Sigur Ros too often) that
stops this music from knocking me to the floor (the way the aforementioned
do). I mean, the final track – So Long, Lonesome - so sweet and soul-warming.
If all you'd heard of this kind of music was this album, surely you'd be
overwhelmed - and what else is music for, but to reach other people?
There may be no surprises from Explosions In The Sky, it's good to know
this album will be out there though, out there soothing and uplifting thousands
of listeners.
CAMORRA
– Watch Us Start A Trend (Calculated Risk) – Now forgive for asking, but
if you’re going to start a trend don’t you need to serve up something just
a little bit new? No? Oh, Okay then, more extreme metal flavoured hardcore
screaming yapping guttural low-end vocals, like he’s got his diseased gonads
caught in a rusty rat-trap and he’s got to cut them off to escape the dark
thing in the corner that wants to eat him. More crunching brutal guitars
that gallop in to old school battle-metal laced death type histrionics
without ever quite loosing the hardcore/Medulla Nocte edge. Hey look, top
quality frontline hardcore laced death metal flavoured crossover brutality
with an Iron Maiden/Slayer tendency or two that’s we’ve heard far too many
times already. They’re goooooood at it and what the hell do we know about
trends, setting rat-traps in case bands come around here or indeed anything
else. www.camorra.co.uk / www.calculated-risk.co.uk
THE
MAJESTIC TWELVE – Schizophrenology (Pandora’s legacy) – Oh now, a whole
new pandora’s lunchbox of goodness and thank god everything on TV is a
lie and another that almost slipped through the cracks on the wrong side
of the hole. The hole may have been in San Diego, with some Mexicans and
Canadians to do the cleaning and Coneleeeza check my posse, no it was a
home in San Diego that the Mexican’s got to clean - the hippies went to
Canada when Dubya won the day. Uncle Sam no doubt loves The Majestic Twelve,
so will Mr Bungle and political whit from the inside lashing out (in such
a subtle way) is always a good thing and they will rule the world for ever,
me me me me.... Hey, Sack Trick and Zappa and Rob Crow and those disco
bits that Faith No More touched on, no, that’s wrong, this is far more
geeky (in a good way) and obscure (in a healthy way) and I really should
be namedropping obscure US indie bands names, bands that only 12 people
have ever heard of, I could be scoring valuable chin-stroking scene points
– not that the Majestic Twelve are obscure or geeky or (well they probably
are but hey, you know they are in a good way...) and Kenyatta Sullivan
and his various bands have been providing fine earfood for us Organs for
quite a few years now and it really does sound like Faith No More being
an obscure geeky and rather beautiful US indie band that no metal head
would ever go anyway near. I love these people, I love the way there’s
so many sunny things here to unwrap, new things to find each time and hey
there is hope and good people in America after all (whispering) and maybe
Bush will go away and all will be well again thank god everything on TV
is a lie. They’re from Willmington N.C (and yes, one day we will stand
beside them whispering at the legendary W.E Fest). And the truth is this
came out last year and I thought we’d already told you about it (we played
it on the radio lots, it fell throw the cracks, blame the Mexican cleaner)
and they’re about as Faith No More as Christmas is in July and if I say
that again the air will explode and one more soldier will scream in to
the sky.
Hey look, I can never put my finger on anything that comes out of Pandora’s
Lunchbox or her fine legacy and I’d never cut it as a reviewer, Majestic
Twelve have me beat, I love this and I can’t tell you why, this review
is way off the mark, the album is available to download for free (but hey
Paypal them a little bit of money, it is worth it, then go tell others
about it). Give me a sign, hear the alarms, we’re not along, just go check
it out. www.myspace.com/themajestictwelve
or www.themajestictwelve.com
EXCRUCIATION
– Angels to Some, Demons to Others (Non Stop Music) – Dooooooom, old school
Candlemass flavoured doom with a slowly uncoiling gothic edge. The
Swiss band have been around in one form or another since 1984 - was that
a death grunt just then? Is it getting Frosty? - they split in 91, were
reborn in 2005, this is their new album and if you like your doom and your
Celtic Frost and your Young Gods and you like it all to slowly smolder
then you’ll like this. Song titles like Solitude pt 2, Mo(u)rning Again,
Black, Is God Diabolical will give you more than an idea, if Excruciation
sound like your thing then this is recommended. www.nonstopmusic.ch

SINGLE
OF THE WEEK
ZERO – Darker Days EP (Roadkill)
– Ah proper aggressive trend-free old school bruising heavy metal, thrashing
and pounding and bruising. Zero are from the North East of England
(where’s Neat when you need them?), this is their debut, and good and strong
it is. Fat brutal heavy end old school thrash metal for fans of Exodus,
the early days of Metallica, Onslaught and the first moves of Anthrax.
Five tracks, all good, they’ve got a slight groove to their heavyweight
old school brutality, this is not for you wussy emo haircuts out there,
you go stick to pop bands like Bullet for My Chemical whatever, this
is not for you this is your nightmare woooooooooaggghhh. The vocalist has
it just right, he’s called Slayer Dude, the drummer is Ted Bundy, get them
out on tour with Short Sharp Shock, M.U.Y fuggin A, dirty offensive unfashionable
metal, just the way it should be. Recommended. www.metalwhiskyandsex.com

SINGLE
OF THE WEEK 2
BEATNIK FILMSTARS – Curious
Role Model (International Lo-Fi Underground) - What do you get if you fall
in love, a girl with a pin to burst your bubble. New Beatnik Film Stars
material, we’ve gone on about them at length before, we have been doing
so for years, (so did Mr Peel, they did loads of sessions for the great
man) the Filmstars are right up there with the Wedding Present and The
Fall (or in a better world they would be), they’re from Bristol and they’re
a national treasure (we said that before as well). This six tracker came
out at the start of the year, the Royal Mail apparently saw fit to hold
our copy back, but hey, who cares about release dates, the EP is out now,
go get.
Sometimes creamy,
sometimes edgy, mostly edgy actually, always rewarding, sometimes soulful,
sometimes barbed, look after your feet now, look after your soul. “They’re
often tagged as the UK’s answer to Guided By voices” (that’s lazy), “they
will continue doing what they want to regardless of what anyone else thinks”,
they’ve got a whole list of facts like this, I like the one about judging
the yodeling competition on German TV. Beatnik Filmstars are excellent,
they make very fine alternative indie music that has one foot in the 80’s
and another foot in your future if you have any sense. www.myspace.com/theinternationallofiunderground

SUPER NASHWAN – Rockabye
Baby (Traficante) - Some kind of soul-laced gospel flavoured supercharged
rock and roll tinged R&B tasting rockabilly. Proper old school retro
sounding R&B like they made in the days before the term was hijacked
by plastic soulless arrrghhh, don’t get me started. Super Nashan are preaching
good old righteous rock and roll, second track sounds a little Louie Louie
around the edges and those backing singers (well they’re not really
backing, they’re a lot more than that) drench it with so much soul. They’re
from London, they’ve just been out on tour with Lily Allen, they’re supercool!
www.myspace.com/supernashwah
DARTZ! – Once Twice Again
(Xtra Mile) – a Breezy bit of post-something or other breezy crafted intelligent
and rather rewarding angular pop that worries a little too much about tall
buildings and they should be irritating but they’re not, they are indeed
impossible not to like for now, I suspect they could get a little irritating
sometime soon, in fact... www.dartzisgood.com

do go spread the word, that’s what this is about – the spreading of information.
We encourage you to do it (unless you’re involved in something that’s a
