flying monkeys hanging off the signposts on the organbrick road... |
So
the whole world went to Texas last week, lemming-like and cliffs and panic
panic panic. Find me the next big thing, meanwhile back in the real world
we’re off down the organbrick road once more and here are the next big
things – or maybe not, who cares? We’re not here for the next big thing
and there’s no panic here. The music industry maybe in panic, the underground
grows stronger and stronger, book it all in to your book of bad breaks.
Do we need another intro? Nah, places to go, people to see, dogs to bark
at, no points to prove. Here’s this week’s signposts. |

The Vortex may have fallen
(SchNEWS 579) but some of London's elite S.Q.U.A.T Team have found
themselves a new communal home. The long-dormant old Good Food Cafe in
Camberwell has been turned into a vibrant open space for people to meet,
eat and perhaps conspire. A collective of South London malcontents, young
and old, have reclaimed this space from dereliction - and yuppie 'development'
- and would welcome support. Suits have been seen sniffing around and licking
their chops. A host of events are planned - films on Wednesdays; every
Friday from the 23rd will see a home-cooked food night; Sunday (25th) they'll
be serving up a cooked breakfast followed by painting and maintenance in
the building. So get down to 192 Warham Street, Camberwell, SE5 |

DEMO
OF THE WEEK
OXYGEN
THIEF - We’re in The Best Of Hands - Sometimes something just turns up
and in a totally unexpected unanticipated understated way just really impresses.
Something that makes everything feel good, that makes life and trawling
through demos and dealing with bands and promoters and everything else
just a little bit more worthwhile and inviting than it seemed to be yesterday.
This fine six track demo just turned up and politely waited in the pile
with all the others, took a day or two to reach the top, we know nothing
of Bristol’s Oxygen Thief, so it just had to wait there with the other
(yeah, we admit it, if something we’ve been anticipating or excited about
turns up it gets to jump the queue, everything else waits in line). Oxygen
thief wages solo acoustic warfare, something that, following the demise
of his previous band, he clearly has to do. He says he sings loud and plays
his guitar to within an inch of its life, I de believe him as well, there’s
so much energy in here with the passion. Now it would be very lazy of us
to throw in names like Frank Turner or Get Cape, does give you a vague
idea of where we’re at through. You need to take a little time with Oxygen
Thief, you need to let his energy and his craft seep in, this is subtle
(and subtle is not overrated) and he’s not going to grab you by the collar
and demand you attention from the off, let his intentions shine through
though, after a couple of plays you’ll know it was right to do so. This
CD has been occupying days of my listening time (while the pile waiting
over there waiting grows bigger). Just really good, really positive, energetic
committed DIY acoustic emotion and bite and just six fine songs. Thank
you Oxygen Thief. He knows how to make things better, a simple formula
to break the pattern... www.oxygenthiefmusic.com

DEMO
OF THE WEEK 2
THE
DAWN CHORUS – Town/City EP - Really fine, well crafted, very easy, inviting
Americana that’ll put a home made bandage on your heart. Where are they
from with their delightfully upbeat mellow American country twang? Hampshire,
South Coast of little old England. Actually they do have an English heartbeat
and a little bit of Bright Eyes meets The Kinks playing alt.country music
with occasional trumpets and little details that could easily go by unnoticed
feel. They claim to be not very fashionable of rock ‘n roll, could be they’re
wrong there, sound very fashionable to me – fashionable or not they (or
we) clearly couldn’t care less and what they very clearly are is very honest
and very real and heartfelt. The problem with most English bands that come
our way is that they almost always sound like they’re compromising and
following the latest fashion or that new band they heard on the radio the
other day – that kind of thinking has clearly never ever entered the brilliant
uplifting mellow country rock heads of The Dawn Chorus. A fine five piece
from nowhere in particular, as honest and beautiful as the day is long.
Breezy, English sweethearts of the rodeo, take everything they have, I
think you might need it - there’s very little left in life that hasn’t
been destroyed, this is the celebration my dear. Just very fine mellow
English Americana and crafted honesty from nowhere in particular. www.thedawnchorus.com

MAYORS OF MIYAZAKI
Live: The Grosvenor, London – 15/3/07
We’ve been itching to catch
up with the Mayors since they sent us their Kancho EP a few months ago.
We described it as “…a bendy, shouty, pointy, churning thing, some wired
kind of urgent math rock that doesn’t quite add up…” Well, as good as the
EP was, the Mayors themselves in the flesh are an even better proposition.
Excuse me for shouting but, honestly, WE HAVE GOT ONE HELL OF A NEW BAND
HERE, PEOPLE.
The Mayors were hard to fault.
Had I bothered to look inside their lovingly-crafted CD sleeve, I’d have
known that they were a three-piece, but I didn’t bother, and so busy and
inventive was their sound that I assumed we were dealing with a four or
five piece, so I was taken aback and wondered how just three of ‘em could
reproduce the material. Without the slightest bit of bother was the answer.
Three urchins, all of whom looked too young to enjoy a legal pint, took
to the stage and almost apologetically said hello. They then launched into
a set of writhing, twisting and utterly dynamic rock music that had the
couple of dozen of us watching hugging ourselves in delight.
Live they have less of the
smart-arsed, abrasive edge that’s apparent on the demo. The sound is fuller,
more melodic, and there’s no clever posturing, just three kids utterly
into the buzz of playing their music for us. They manage to be inventive
without losing drive or momentum – even on tracks like ‘Critics lack Conviction’,
where for a moment the three of them bark madly at each other – they sandwich
this strange interlude between two quite different but compelling, multi-riffed
passages of driving rock. The musicianship is excellent. All three wrestle
from their instruments a variety of sounds and textures (we see a five
string bass actually being played to the full, rather than just being posed
with) and they’re accomplished enough to avoid the impression that they’re
just playing for themselves.
US influences seem apposite
to mention – the Mayors take the flow and thrust of Stinking Lizaveta and
play it through the jagged arrangements of At The Drive In. In their more
straightforward moments (such as the chorus to ‘Queen Mary vs. the Robots’)
they come close to the commercial metal of Hundred Reasons, but they’re
rarely that obvious for any length of time. Shellac and Hose.Got.Cable
are other reference points, but they also bring a mischievous English wit
to the intensity, as well as a readiness to throw any number of ideas into
a song, not unlike the Optimist Club at times. Though they’d be appreciated
by a prog lover or the Cardiacs cognoscenti, the Mayors of Miyazaki are
definitely a rock band in the noisy, raucous sense of the term, just one
infinitely more interesting than usual. They’d go down a storm with the
more open-minded of the ATP crowd. And the next challenge for the Mayors
of Miyazaki is precisely that – to find an audience beyond the pitifully
small number of punters here tonight. If you get the chance, you should
make the effort to see them. This was as good a set as I’ve seen for ages
from a new, young band starting out on their adventures. The highest of
recommendations.

ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK |
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
THEE
MORE SHALLOWS – Book Of Bad Breaks (Anticon) - Forecasters of delight and
no disasters ever, every twinkle of every light, they have such an instantly
recognisable sound, a finger print all of their own these Thee More Shallows.
And you know we’re going to gush about them again, like turkeys with the
gift of flight. What are they going to pull out of their red case this
time? How are things in that warm twilight world, no, in that 2am world
of deserted streets and quiet crashes, that peaceful world where street
lights hum and electric flickers with so much beautiful colour? The warm
San Francisco band were always going to have a tough task coming up with
something better than 2005’s vitally wonderful More Deep Cuts – they wisely
haven’t tried, they’ve taken their fingerprints over to different scapes,
to explore different shades and moods - away from depression and towards
mania (so they say). Far less dark and inward this time, still that gloriously
prog edge and that richly detailed orchestrated post-pop, still those whispered
words and French horns and Casio warmth and subtle beats - lyrical one
liners that paint whole pictures. Another film of an album, another set
of Hopper paintings and hints of Wire, Granddaddy, early Bowie and graceful
Tortoise, and yes as pointed out elsewhere, hints of Vaughn Williams. Delicate
white noise and shorting neon signs in the rain-light, that and white masks
and a mosquito haze of delicate detail – so much detail, something new
with every listen and it clearly needs weeks before we get in to all the
corners and lift all the layers and find it all. How do they make so much
sound so minimal? Ah look, they could never better More Deep Cuts, they
managed to equal it though, another stunning masterpiece of a film, another
set of warm reward songs and more of their wonderfully rewarding and very
unique sound (warned you we were going to gush again). One of the very
best bands out there in a world of far far too any very fine bands. www.theemoreshallows.com

ALSO
CHECK OUT
THE
CHINESE STARS – Listen To Your Left Brain (Three One G) – We gots here
some rather fine American new wave circa 1982 coming at in a fresh sounding
2007 kind of way. The Stars feature Craig Kureck and Eric Paul,ex, both
of the now disbanded Arab On Radar – and like everything else that has
evolved out of the glorious Radar, this is good good good. Infectious,
bendy bouncy new wave of a Pere Ubu, Devo American pop rock nature. Oh,
bass player from Six Finger Satellite as well, there’s quite a pedigree
here. The Chinese Stars are reinventing that that has already been invented,
admire and indeed celebrate their resolve, fine new wave pointy bouncy
newwaveness. www.threeoneg.com
PUBLIC
RELATIONS EXERCISE – Come You Are Safe We Are From The Bombs (Field) –
More of that relentless refreshing post-hardcore post-rock post-post post-everything
urgent noise that PRE do so very very well. They’ve been building and building,
we’ve been telling you about the gigs and demos for quite a time now (one
day you’ll thank us) and you will in time come to love their invigorating
inventive relentless edgy screaming energy and the violent musical craft
of it all. They’re from Leicester, there’s five of them, they’re brilliant
live and now they have an excellent high speed roller-coaster ride of a
compelling debut album to back the live experience up. Inventively discordant,
relentlessly in your face and confronting your every thought, this is not
a comfortable sound and you should find comfort in that. We have ourselves
a thankless task, go enjoy the Public Relations Exercise ride, don’t take
anyone or anything for granted, it don’t make for good public relations
– Scissormen I tell you! Hold on tight. Thank you. www.field-records.com
/ www.myspace.com/publicrelationsexercise
SHAM
69 – United (Dream Catcher/Secret) – 28 track double live CD set. Selected
cherry-picked live recordings from 78 and 79 rather than just one whole
gig so there’s no real sense of event (and only one in-between song ruck!).
Pretty messy slack dirty faced versions but then this is Sham so you know
you can expect nothing but messy raw shouty terrace chant vocals and pretty
basic messy messsy massy playing and everything pretty much running on
attitude, energy and that hint of pending violence. Sham were great, they
sound very dated now, this is an alright live album, quality is good enough,
better then going down the pub ain’t it, come on, come on... – www.secretrecordslimited.com
LAP
– The Ignored Effect (Populus) – We have here a screamo beano nu metal
beast and a whole slab load of melodic creaming and screaming and I don’t
like Poison The Well much and I’m not that impressed with the direction
Biffy Clyro have taken in recent times but hey, if you are, and Deftones
still get your ears cooking then this Manchester three piece are pretty
good at it. They have some colour and restrained and an appreciation of
light and shade and yeah, they’re alright I guess. Seven track mini album/EP
thing,or is it jut a demo? Not that clear really.. www.myspace.com/lap
/ www.myspace.com/populusrecords
ANTI
NOWHERE LEAGUE – Secret Radio Recordings (Dream Catcher/Secret) – Filthy
twenty track live album, wreckorded live in 2005 and the return of The
League captured in full on obnoxious nasty shouting cussing metal-edged
street punk effect Law breaking, people hating, filthy dirty animals,
it shouldn’t be allowed, where’s my MP? The thing with live albums is they’re
only really for the already fanatically converted and all the converted
really need to know is does the album capture the band? Is the recording
any good? Are they just trying to flog us a naff bootleg quality load of
old toss or is it live and dangerous? Is it any good? Who got branded and
who did what with the peep-hole panties? Yes, this is well recorded, yes
it does captured the gloriously obnoxiousness of The League, yes the sound
quality is good, yes they are wonderfully dumb and hell bent on self destruction,
self mutilation, self flagellation and whatever else you got for ‘em, and
no, they shouldn’t really still be sounding this good in 2005... Hey look,
this is the League, you either love them or you stay a million miles away
- if you love ‘em, then this is a good documentation and I got to go wash
my hands now. No, you can’t have a sip of my beer, go buy your own and
go buy your own Anti Nowhere League live album as well yer fuggin scabby
scrounging filthy crusty punk - I hate people. Excellent live album, actually,
not a bad introduction for those of you who’ve never encountered Animal
and his crew before, so I was talking crap back there wasn’t I, punk rock
mate. www.secretrecordslimited.com
AWESOME
COLOR - Awesome Color (Ecstatic Peace) Some kind of Germanic 70’s
flavoured space rock alternativeness from Ann Arbor Michigan. A kind of
Stooges/Sonic Youth/Who blues rock American dream chasing thing for Hawkwind/Pink
Faries fans. www.ecstaticpeace.com
999
– Nasty Tales (Secret) - Must be release a live album from an ageing
British punk band week or something. 999 always seemed a little pedestrian
and workman-like to me, nothing here on this nineteen track CD changes
my mind. Decent enough quality live album, should keep those who are already
fans happy, doubt if it will win over any new ones though. www.secretrecordslimited.com
SLAUGHTER
AND THE DOGS – Manchester 101 (Secret) – Another live album, Manchester’s
cut-price take on the New York Dolls recorded in 2005, they were probably
well past their sell by date (twenty years past...) and a little too pub
rock by 2005, anyway, there’s a live album out, here’s the link, follow
it up if you want to - www.secretrecordslimited.com

STRIP SHOWROOM - The sheer
climate-killing folly of gas guzzling 4X4s was stripped bare in Hereford
last week - well if it wasn't, at least a few SUVs were. It seems the 'Discovery'
of a Land Rover dealership flogging their wares to middle-class school-running
Mum's angered local 'Defenders' of the environment who arrived to chuck
paint stripper over 14 of the nearest offending vehicles, leaving a trail
of destruction and slogans to boot. The action was carried out in the name
of the Earth Liberation Front, who presumable are a bunch of real 'Freelanders'...
For more on international anti 4X4 action see www.4x4network.org.
And of course we should point out that this kind of direct action isn’t
big and isn’t clever and no no no, naughty naughty, you just stick to buying
records and don't ne questioning any of these things now, free thought is
bad for you...

65DAYSOFUPDATES -
Hello. This is a news update
for the band 65daysofstatic, written from a house in Sheffield where
we are discussing who pays the water bill while 65 go to Texas tomorrow
morning. If you are new to this mailing list, and you were expecting something
a little more in keeping with the brief, optimistic style that the media
has conditioned us to expect, then we can only apologise.
We have a new album called
'The Destruction of Small Ideas'. It is out in the UK, Europe & the
United States on 30th April through Monotreme Records (distribution is
through either Cargo or Redeye, depending on your place in the world).
The album is out in Japan on 25th April on Zankyo Records.
The Tracklisting looks like
this:
1. When We Were Younger &
Better.
2. A Failsafe.
3. Don't Go Down to Sorrow.
4. Wax Futures.
5. These Things We Can't
Unlearn.
6. Music is Music as Devices
are Kisses is Everything.
7. Lyonesse.
8. The Distant & Mechanised
Glow of Eastern European Dance Parties.
9. Little Victories.
10. Primer.
11. White Peak/Dark Peak.
12. The Conspiracy of Seeds.
Upon careful listening, you
will be able to hear contributions from The Mirimar Disaster, Digitonal
and Circle Takes the Square.
Deep breath. Calm down. Count
to ten. You read that right. Please note that this isn't in some kind of
'65-are-running-out-of-ideas' way. This is in a 'Let's-make-the-best-fucking-
noise-it-is-in-us-to-make-and-if- this-involves-bringing-in-people-we -trust-to-hit-blow
-bow-or-scream-things-then-so-be-it'' kind of way.
You know how some bands find
their sound, make a crossover album with some kind of 'name' producer and
the SLICKEST of sounds to try and reach a bigger market, whilst losing
all the urgency, panic and soul that made you fall for them in the first
place?
That's not what you're going
to get with this album. If you are anything like us (and you're on this
list so we figure you must be) then you have studied your heroes and the
music they made. You can plot graphs charting the rise and fall of bands
that tricked you into thinking they were the ones you'd been waiting your
whole life for, only for them to let you down the second they get snared
by the major label machine, or get used to the taste of phone adverts.
Most likely bands fail despite
their best intentions. Perhaps The Destruction of Small Ideas will be a
self-fulfilling prophecy? Let's hope not, huh? The 65 family has staked
a lot on this one. We're messing with the big boys, armed with nothing
but battered guitars, an EXCELLENT ability to be rude to people, some f**king
cool new songs and the enforced naivety that is required to believe that
what we do still counts for something, somewhere, somehow. How can we possibly
hope to bring this, our fight, to the Money and the Brand Monkeys and the
Cross-marketing Promotions Advisers and the Shareholders and the Fucking
Money that dictates what people should hear and buy and expect them to
even notice our presence!?
Let's find out! We'll see
you on the road and on the way down. Come and see us on the road, where
we'll either be weeping with delight, or weeping. And listening to Dee-lite.
GROOVE IS IN THE HEART:
- A cut (hacked)-down version
of 'Don't Go Down to Sorrow' will be released as a single in the UK on
9th April. You can see the uncharacteristically slick video, produced by
65's brothers-in-arms Medlo on our website. The B-Sides are ace and details
are on to be found at 65daysofstatic.com.
Go there from here at the end of all this.
- We have nothing to offer
you but this album. Nothing here will save you. It is designed only to
soften the blow.
- There are bands everywhere
selling things for money. We?re just selling this, (except for a few t-shirts
that keep us in petrol. When the petrol runs out, who knows what we’ll
spend that money on?) But for now, we have come to terms with our contribution
to capitalism by making this album into a CD. If you can afford to buy
it, please know your purchase will go directly into putting 65daysofstatic
on the road. The opposite of this theory is LIMEWIRE.
-Somewhere on the planet
we have buried treasure in the form of a Seed Bank, deep underground, so
when the day comes that the air is no longer breathable, 65's grandchildren
can hide down there and wait for a time when it is safe to re-emerge and
plant life back into the soil. We're calling this project 'Fucking Hell,
the Government appears to be acting on behalf of multinational companies.
I thought our vote counted? ' and we are working in conjunction with the
Norwegian Science Board in order to bring it to fruition. Deal with it.
Or buy the album and read the inlay to your sweet, innocent children as
they lay in bed, unable to comprehend the trouble we have got them into.
- We're getting close to
finally being able to get back down to the fundamentals of being in 65daysofstatic,
which is touring and touring and touring hard. Here's what's lined up for

SINGLES |
| So
we have three singles of the week this week, so what? We had a good week
for singles and we don't mean on no hornymatch dot com either...
SINGLE
OF THE WEEK
STRIPLIGHT
– Hold It Down (Tummy Touch) - New single (with lots of b-sides and mixes
and such) from London’s rather feisty, rather angular Striplight. They
have that kind of Monkey Boy lead bass drive and an angular groove that’ll
sweep you up, do let it. They talk of noir-wave angular artrock and singer
Liz has that classic staccato bark, she has style, she’ll drag you in to
their sharpness and their impressively smooth jerky Pere Ubu/Lena Lovich
discordance. Fine single, sounds like a early days of Stiff treasure. Recommended.

ALSO
CHECK OUT
FUTON
– Strap It On (Dirte) – Stomping, slick, clean cut, slick slick, dirty
mouth Glam pop from Bangkok with Simon Gilbert from Suede in there somewhere,
very modern sounding retro glam, T.Rex, Bowie, little too slick for us,
but hey, if you’re curious then go find out for yourself – www.dirterecords.com
GREEN
PITCH – Unpredictable, Illogical (Ryko) – Creamy indie pop from Denmark,
warm girl-fronted Sugarcubes meets Whipped Cream kind of thing, kind of
sparse yet inviting and soothing. www.greenpitch.dk
MALPRACTICE
– Breath (7 Records) – Slick, modern sounding hard edged big rock
from a new UK band featuring Mark Chapman from A and Ben Calvert from Vex
Red. www.malpractice.com.

THE END BIT... |
| As
always, thanks to SchNEWS
for their alternative news bulletins - www.schnews.org.uk |
Open
message to you bands, labels and anyone else with a blog or a My Space
page or a webzine or who are generally out there getting involved in a
positive way and spreading the word about fine music and creativity and
underground/alternative art that go bump in the night. This is how it works
around here; we’re perfectly happy for you to cut and paste our reviews
and put them on your band/label pages or where ever you want, please please
do go spread the word, that’s what this is about – the spreading of information.
We encourage you to do it (unless you’re involved in something that’s a
little unsavoury like one bunch of nasty little right wing scumbags we
had a run in with a few weeks ago), There’s no ego here, we’re not going
to come chasing you about copyright and all that crap. All we ask you to
do is credit the material and add links to our pages with anything you
want to use. Please feel free to use our words to spread the word, it’s
how it works – word word word it’s basic netiquette, it’s weblove and only
a massive ego-inflated no-mark would think any other way. Use our words,
we take it as a massive compliment – please do add the link though, please
tell people where you got it from and cut 'n paste away (like many others
have already done), the more people who read about these bands and things
the better don’t yer think? It’s the underground way.
