white lies, only black ones and Rain Emperors and time for another editorial
start and an opening shot and hold on tight while we make something up
to fill this opening bit and consider black tea and full stops and how
we know it to be best on most occasions and how would you like yours? Burning
candles at both ends and hot wax all over the English castle where we consider
the Boston tea party and hope and red ribbons and blue letters that mark
things that must be marked and these are, once again....
and
these are, once again....
and these are, once again,
the things that have been in our ears and on our minds this week. Please
do explore and if it sounds or looks interesting then just hit the link
and go make your own minds up, make contact, go switch the other, go explore,
we're just here to point the way - don't let this thing blow over, we've
done with undercover - like we say every week, our reviews and thoughts
are mere signposts designed to guide you to the things you might like to
feast on yourselves... don’t you just love the instant way this web thing
works when things fall right and the doors flip open and the touch of a

this why you bookmarked us...? |
ANARCHISTWOOD
are an awkward band to pin down, and things, so it seems, just got a little
bit more awkward. Awkward is good - well in this case it is, awkwardly
good creative anarchy is what we want. Seems the London band just added
a stand up drummer and some kind of new wave tribal swampbeat to their
scuzzy punk/prank rock goodness. There's a new track, Don’t Bulshit
The Artist – War Is Menstural Envy Mix that you can grab for free right
now. The track sounds like some kind of fuzzed out tribal Melvins meets
a broken-glass Plasmatics with all the distorted fuzz, edgy crunch and
those dark sinister menacing vocals from Sister Kist. Rockin’ Jerry is
the new heart-beater and this download only track is the first fruit.
The track can be downloaded free via www.punkvert.tv/anarchistwood.
Meanwhile
you can catch the new ANARCHISTWOOD line up on 31st January at the Inn
On The Green in Ladbrook Grove, West London, where they’re joined for a
Punkvert night by RUDE MECHANICALS, THE ELECTRIC BRAINS, HANDSUM PETE,
BELLA BLUE and all kinds of people and art and boxes and.... The night
is the second Specialisation Is For Insects launch night and yes, proper
London underground punk rock creativity is alive and well and in the hands
of the Anarchistwood, Ex-Gratia, punkvert team of musicians, film-makers
and record label runners...

NEW ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK |
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
LARS HORNTVETH – Kaleidoscopic
(Smalltown Supersound) – The follow up to his rather acclaimed debut album
Pooka.
Lars Horntveth is Jaga Jazzist leader by day, this is the second album
under his own name. Kaleidoscopic is one delicately refreshing thirty-seven
minute composition recorded with forty-one members of the Latvian National
Orchestra (34 string players, 3 percussionists, clarinet, flute, bass trombone
and one harp) with Lars himself playing piano, horns and clarinets. The
orchestra was lead by Terje Mikkelson, who now conducts the St. Petersburg
Philharmonic and the Moscow Radio Orchestra.
Kaleidoscopic is
a flowing piece, ever shifting in the most subtle of ways, evolving quietly
without you really noticing the flowing change of dynamic or the increase/decrease
of instrumentation. Always smooth, always soothing, never difficult, always
inviting – an accomplished curve as it were. A journey via orchestrated
sound that musically feels somewhere near Steve Reich, a more subtle flavour
akin to Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells, specks of John Adams and
his avant vastness here and there - nothing obvious, just hints, flavours
(and we are skating around architecture here using mere words on electronic
paper to try and convey this creative beauty once more). There’s a delicate
playfulness to the orchestration and the way if flows and takes you with
it, indeed if Kaleidoscopic was to be summed up in just one word
than that word would have to be lovely. “This is Lars Horntveth’s
largest and most challenging project yet” we’re told by the press release,
sound like he accomplished rather a lot - this is a beautiful piece of
work, a flowing, refreshing, graceful, soothing piece of classical experimentation,
a meticulous journey to take yourself on again and again. Highly recommended

WINTERSLEEP – Welcome To
The Night Sky (One Four Seven) – Heroic, robust, delicate... Considered
alternative indie rock from Halifax Nova Scotia (Canada). Wintersleep aren’t
really doing anything radically different, they touch on lots of contemporary
catchy considered thoughtful, slightly dark, North American alternative
indie rock – bit a R.E.M feel, Eric’s Trip, Snow Patrol and such, a touch
of Mogwai maybe... The thing is, they do it with an certain refined sense
of being, an ambitious good that puts them a little further up there than
so many others. Melodic brightness and really. just good songs –
well produced songs that feel just... Time and space and stitched together
right, and yes, a touch of the stars and the night sky in there with the
musical rush of the Miasmal Smoke. There’s a soul to this third
album, a hopeful glow that’s perfectly taken home with that last eight
minutes of stand out track Miasmal Smoke – an infinite yes you might
say. Heart-warming, echoing, Weighty Ghost – elegant verse lengths,
pushing those dynamics. Wintersleep’s warm beauty may not be immediately
apparent, it is there though, look a little deeper into the dark of the
night sky and their stars are there Weighty Ghost probably
is the highlight, body floating away, so much to say, lots of highlights
actually, a fine album - www.myspace.com/wintersleep
|
VAKA – Kappa Delta Phi (Murkhouse)
– Atmospheric, sometimes brooding, always ambitiously epic, post-rock/metal
that stands out a little. Vaka have an edge of their own, their post-whatever
adventures aren’t the usual ones, this is fresh air. Mostly instrumental,
always intense, always powerful, monumental – when the vocals do arrive
they’re heavy - not too domineering though, vocals lines that add in a
the same way the Mellotron or that extra drum does, just another layer
of imaginative forthright instrumentation. Kappa Delta Phi appears
to be a rather ambitious studio project recorded at a number of studios
throughout Sweden and Finland and featuring members of A Swarm Of The Sun,
Come Sleep, Dozer, I Are Droid, Ghost Parade and Paatos alongside main-man
Karl Daniel Liden. It isn’t all slab-heavy, there is a considered delicate
touch, a crafted set of colours in there with the strings, the slide guitars
and organic keyboards, in there with the gloom and foreboding doom, with
the inventive drumming and the strident piano, the delicately brushed piano....
So much of what passes for post-rock/metal these days is far too obvious
and sign-posted. Mapped out so you know where you’re going long before
the music actually takes you there. Vaka, whoever they are, are making
music that’s just a little different - something intense, adventurous,
rewarding and very very heavy. One for followers of Isis, Neurosis, Godspeed,
Opeth and such... rather recommended – www.myspace.com/vakamusic
or www.murkhouserecordings.com

WET
PAINT – It Rots (Trial & Error) – They sound like a lot of those 90’s
North American grungy slacker bands – Dinosaur Jr meets Pavement kind of
thing, they do have the quality and energy to get away with it all though.
They’re kind of bold about it, just right in there sticking fingers in
holes and doing what they want to. Being what they want to be and clearly
not bothered what anyone says or thinks – and that honest energy and forthright
drive carries the London band through (and yes, they do sound like a London
band and not just some slacker obsessives from over here who want to be
from over there). Wrapped in tight sharp rawness and crashing straight
in, delivered with a smile and some variety, not the most original thing
you’ll hear this month but hey, they’ll make you skip a little...

or www.trialanderrorrecordings.com
SAM KILLS TWO – Sam Kills
Two (Rocket Girl) – Easy on the ear indie/alt rock pleasantry from London
town and a debut album that rolls in in a very easy laid back calming kind
of way. Soothing songs, singer songwriter flavours, hazy songs, simple
and unobtrusively exquisite – kind of breezier Red House Painters, a more
refined, together and English Elliott Smith feel... folky, emotive, simple,
enjoyable... www.myspace.com/samkillstwo
/ www.rocketgirl.co.uk
GRAVANZIA – Doom To The Doom
Men (self Release) – More of your underground experimental space rock direct
from a planet somewhere near London town. Gravanzia have been making demos
and kind of doing their thing in their own old school underground way for
a few years now. This full album is a whole step up in to a bigger league
for the band. We’re talking theatrical space rock and saucers that fly
near the goodship Hawkwind, the dark prog-space of Gong or Amon Duul II,
the hypnobeat of Neu, the Om-riffing flavours of Ozric Tentacles. Twisting
space riffs, dark theatrics, flying teapot taxis, touch of menace under
the surface. Paranoia? Claustrophobia? Lush sound this time, full sound,
they pushed the boat out (or maybe the spaceship), dark edge to it, the
doom men and such, sinister spacerock, dark operatic spaceprog – www.myspace.com/gravanzia
STUART TURNER – File Under
Carnal Knowledge (Sun Pier) – Well he can’t get past here without a comment
about that dreadful album tittle and the fact that Van Halen already tried
that really not very good album title pun out on us a few years back...
He’s from Rochester, Kent, although he sounds like he’s from the swamplands
of Southern USA. Solo blues and Tom Waits, Seasick Steve, John Lee Hooker,
Howling Wolf... He’s really not bad at it, kind of hard to get past the
fact that he’s from the very unSouthern not very U.S county of Kent (in
the South of England) and you kind of wonder where he got that accent and
shouldn't he really be a bit more Billy Childish or Billy Bragg or just
a little bit less American about it all or something? If you can get past
that, then not bad stripped back freight train riding back bar room down
at heel blues – awful album title though and I really can’t get past the
fact that it doesn’t quite sound like things are grounded in reality, need
a sense of place with music like this - www.myspace.com/stuartjamesturner
MAEVEN – Maeven (Lockjaw)
- Energetic punky metal bluster and bite, four South Yorkshire teenagers
with enough drive and attitude to take on whoever you got for ‘em to take
on. Think early days no messing straight-ahead street metal of Girlschool,
touch of Backyard Babies scuzz... They can play, they know it – confident,
strident, right on your toes and in your face scuzz rock, a tribute to
whatever you want, four girls just doing it and doing it right... nice
one. www.myspace.com/maevenmusic
PAUL GOODWIN – Scars (BFF)
– One of those reflective inward looking English emo singer-songwriter
types, one of those life-assessing Frank Turner types. Hard not to like
them – hard not to like the naive innocence, the bare-naked honesty. Paul
Goodwin is taking it in to a quiet accomplished Blue Nile area without
losing that vocalised innocence, the slight raw edge and that hopeful glow

US DEEPER IN TO THE STORM....
The
Rain Emperor: New concept performance promises a night of multi-sensory
flight in East London - 26th, 27th, 28th February 2009
Here’s
the blurb, looks and sounds good to us so...
Visual
arts company Beggars Velvet introduces rare scores from renowned composer
Robert Jacob to form a multi-sensory live music, theatre and visual arts
performance event. Fusing music, performance and visuals arts, The Rain
Emperor leads the audience into a world full of obsession with the elements.
With secret chambers, unexpected appearances and haunting music the performance
will transcend the boundaries between audience, artists, sound and light.
Stirring with mystery, the performance is played out in stages, with characters
leading guests further into the storm. Set in a restored Victorian warehouse
in Shoreditch, The Rain Emperor defies conventional expectations of theatre
and music experiences. The performance was conceived by Robert Jacob’s
daughter, Judy Jacob, and is set to be a highlight for the arts calendar
when its takes place in February 2009.
The
Rain Emperor
The
Rain Emperor is a concept based performance event, created to offer a fully
immersive and unique experience for each member of the audience. Using
Robert Jacob’s music as a backdrop and an inspiration for the other artists
who are involved; the show explores Jacob’s music in every form, slowly
guiding visitors through a series of vaults, passageways and atriums using
sound, movement, light, film and performance. Shoreditch’s Village Underground
makes the perfect home to this atmospheric art piece and will be transformed
into a dark, mysterious world for the performance. The Rain Emperor promises
to awaken a truly genuine sense of emotion; from vulnerability to excitement
and exhilaration. It blurs the boundaries between the arts and invites
the audience to experience chamber music and an entirely unexpected way.
Robert
Jacob - Musician and Composer (19th July 1952 – 11th April 2005)
Contemporary
composer Robert Jacob was inspired greatly by his love of the rain and
its rhythms and became known as ‘The Rain Emperor’ as a result. Born in
London in 1952, Robert Jacob became a professional musician in 1973. He
played throughout Europe with a succession of soul, rock, blues and jazz
bands on guitar, including self composed material. He worked on numerous
studio and recording projects as a session musician, arranged music for
various bands and ensembles and provided music for video and film.Robert
was an spnm shortlisted composer and composed music for many different
combinations of instruments from Symphony Orchestra to percussion ensemble.
He also had a keen interest in composing for dance and theatre. Robert’s
most recent commissions include a computer generated piece and a suite
of pieces for solo Spanish Guitar, Three Dances for String Quartet and
arrangements for The Dillington International Guitar Festival and providing
music for two short contemporary films. His ingenuity was never more apparent
than in his work “Aquamass” (2000). Commissioned under the Year of the
Artist scheme, he worked with a variety of community groups and the pupils
of Bishop David Brown School to compose and perform a work in a swimming
pool using the acoustic properties above and below the water, in collaboration
with choreographer Vicki Balaam. In June 2002, he conducted a research
week at the Rhoda McGraw Theatre to develop a system using medical and
musical technology to enhance the capacity of performers to expressively
perform with music/sounds from a digital source in real-time, with dancer
Caroline Lofthouse. In 2003 Robert was commissioned by Dilliington Festival
to write piece for Guitar Orchestra and Electric Motor premiered there
in August 2003. His innovative approach to composition will be remembered
by all who attended. He was the founder member and MD of Naked Sunday Collective,
a group combining elements of jazz, funk, hip hop, Drum and Bass and turntablism
with improvisation. ‘The Rain Emperor’ is a celebration of his music and
his memory. Artists involved The performance is a collaboration by some
of the UK’s most highly acclaimed and upcoming artists who have worked
together using Robert Jacob’s music as their inspiration to create an engaging,
experimental and emotive event. They will produce music, film, dance and
physical performance to create a two hour immersion into the elements..
The
Rain Emperor is the creation of Judy Jacob, daughter of Robert Jacob. Judy
has unearthed many scores from her father’s repertoire and is keen that
through this event, his works can be experienced in their best light, by
a wide audience. She said, “My father was a very talented musician and
composer, his music is inspiring. Rather than simply release the scores,
I wanted to create a performance based around them in order to fully exhibit
the music’s emotion. “This event will be my first independent piece of
this scale as a director and I hope for it to set the grounds for further
collaborations within the industry. The artists involved in The Rain Emperor
have created

Rain Emperor happens at Village Underground, 54 Hollwell Lane, London EC2

LIME HEADED DOG – Kfum &
Kfuf (Volcano Attack) – Lime Headed Dog is the bed that Joel Cox (ex of
Good Shoes) has made for himself so he better lie in it and lie in it no
matter who Lorenzo is. Two tracks, and never mind how many bitches and
glitches and gameshow chainsaws there are in there, get in to bed and hands
above the covers. Microwaved and unlike anything that you can instantly
put your finger on, he’ll run you out of here son, put up your wanted posters...
Some kind of sophisticated lo-fi D.I.Y otherness with bangs and clanks
and kfums and klufs and who knows what or where... Oh look, the beauty
of being here on line rather than on paper is we don’t have to describe
it, we can just tell you how good it is and how it made people run in to
ask what it was and give you the link so you can go run yourselves. Go
listen and find out, go make your own bed and lie in it, they need your
love, I need a big hug, we’re late, you go find out, good dog, woof woof,
bark bark bark, single of the week, wonder if he knows the Lime Spider?...

BUZZFUZ – God To Holloway (Blang) – Whimsical breezy English pop with a
touch of folk in there. Uplifting unpretentious simple, bright, clever,
crafted Soft Boys, XTC pop. Distinctive dulicmer hooks and pigeons needing
e.numbers and pies and really uplifting - rather timeless English sounding
pop tunes and another good single from Sgt Buzzfuz...

OUTRAZE
– Take One For The Scene (Holier Than Thou) - Well they’re certainly mouthy
f**kers, annoying and rather punchable, then again so are their obvious
heroes from the North. Never walk in anyone’s shadow sings yer man
with his nasally Manc voice and all his swagger (they’re from Oxfordshire,
not Moss Side or Burnage), and as annoying as they are, I kind of like
‘em. Best new Oasis single for ages, first two tracks are killers, third’s
a bit of a turd mind you, fourth gets them back on track though. And those
lyrics are straight out of Noel and Liam’s best feel the sun on the
back of your eyes book of mean-nothing cliches. Total utter Oasis clones,
they got the swagger and the attitude to pull it off, well here in recorded
form at least. They’re a pain in the arse with their annoying MySpace spam
and their clueless arrogance, and they are little more than utter gobshite
Oasis wannabes but I do kind of like this. They got the spark and that
backbeat and that fire that went out of those Gallagher brother eyes ages
ago, guess it may just be something to do with hunger and attitude
of small band or something like that. Problem is they clearly think
they’re original and better than anyone else - they're not.... Best Oasis
single in ages though, now get the f out here you mouthy tossers, last
thing we need is another Oasis, haven't you got some burgers that need
flipping or something? – www.myspace.com/outraze
REMEDY
– Strange Fast Now (self release) – Blues based female fronted melodic
old-school hard rock. Big-voiced and confident, 70’s flavoured poppy hard
rock, Black Crowes, Guns ‘N Roses, Bad Company, Skunk Anansie, bit of a
Janis Joplin voice. Pretty standard issue stuff if we’re truthful - harmless
enough hard rock and there waiting if you fancy a slice or two... www.remedyrock.co.uk

WHOLE
SCHEBANG – Stranger Than Weather - Now this is good, three rather impressive
tracks, three rather different songs. English folk pop and an alternative
set of musical colours. Whole Schebang are from London, they’re alive with
strings, accordions, flugelhorns, banjos, flutes, cornet and most importantly
of all, really colourful infectious songs. And all in good looking handmade
packaging as well. Alternative indie/folk goodness that’s alive and wandering
wherever they want to. Rousing reeling stuff, hearty songs, tales of singing
in the rain and something new to hold a candle to, clever harmonies and
turning everyone in anything but strangers, friendly kind of souls, they’d
never go on a killing spree... www.myspace.com/wholeschebang

OF THE WEEK 2
THE
BUMBLEBEES - Fluffy clouds of joy and happy songs (although we don’t really
want to know what happened to the lambs) and don’t jump too early for the
fence and.... The Bumblebees are three girls and boys from Bristol, they
all sing, they play infectious new wave kaleidoscope synths, scratchy busy
flitty guitars and clever bass. Infectious pop songs and they sound like
a band that’s called The Bumblebees should sound – all flowers and sunshine
and black and gold stripes and buzz buzz honey-good. Why is he doing this?
Why is he doing this? Why is he doing this? Why is he doing this? Why is
he doing this? Why is he doing this? And their very existence is
all part of the plan to pollinate your ears with the joy of their other-pop
and their clever simplicity and innocent goodness. Kind of sharp-cut lo-fi
new wave pop clarity and Vision On creativity and X and Y enjoyment and
musical chemicals that will tell you that you chromosomes are happy. Four
catchy songs for your brain and how it works, and nothing that will ever
let you down, we like these Bumblebees – www.myspace.com/thebumblebeesinfestya

FLUTATIOUS
– Relaxed vibe, mellow flute-led Ozricsness, all jazzy and mellow Gong-like
instrumentals. Three tracks - opener called Spacechick that maybe gives
you an idea or two as to where the North West London band are coming from.
Flutes, fiddles, jazzy space rock and free-festi mellowness, healthy hint
of folk, bits of forward moving progressive groove. Kind of fluid band
you’d have found at places like Club Dog in the early 90’s. One for followers
of things on the mellow side of Ozric Tentacles, Gong, Ullulators and such,
rather good if you like this kind of thing. Seems they have a whole album
that they’ve been selling at gigs and such, good stuff – www.myspace.com/flutatiousuk

BLATZ
/ FILTH – Shit Split (Alternative Tentacles) – Originally released on Lookout
back in 1991, the split was and still is a vital slice of that ever exploding
East Bay San Francisco underground ‘real’ hardcore punk scene that revolved
and still evolves around the legendary home of 924 Gilman Street. 924 was,
back then, the home of bands like Operation Ivy, Rancid, Green Day, Jawbreaker
and a whole lot more and this really does carry that spirit. The re-issue
features the original eight songs from Blatz, including their signature
Fuk Shit Up and a cover of Fear’s I Don’t Care Bout You and the original
seven songs from Filth including Scarred For Life and their version of
the Peter And The Test Tube Babies classic Banned From The Pubs. This re-issue
is expanded though, double disc set that contains pretty much everything
both bands ever did in a recorded state. And the two bands compliment each
other so well with their destructive power - really a lot more than just
the drunk punks they’re kind of accused of being. There’s a touch of nihilistic
Crass to those Blatz tracks, all those stars in eyes that are just shattered
glass and such. Classic raw screaming hard fast proper hardcore punk rock
and a more than welcome re-issue done the right way you’d expect a label
like AT to do it. That unique East Bay spirit you can still find today
if you go looking. Redefined roots and time for more changes, this is a
timely reminder and touching on twenty year on, a fresh blast of rancid
punk rock air... everything must indeed still go. www.alternativetentacles.com
