Thing of the Day
SO WHAT ARE WET SOUNDS DOING IN 2011?
January 3rd 2011
And what is Wet Sounds anyway? Read on…
.
Spanning
two months from 28th Jan until 26th March, Wet Sounds installs at
swimming pools in seven UK cities. An open to the public event
featuring live music by Joel Cahen and including the deep
listening gallery featuring new work by selected artists under the
theme ReVerse, selected artists include Daniel Blinkhorn
(Au), Jessica Rowland (UK), Julius Holtz (D), Liam Quinn (UK),
Philip Mantione (USA), Riz Maslen (UK)
In London,
Newcastle, Glasgow and Bangor, Wet Sounds invites special guests to use
the dual sound system, above and below the water, to create a unique
live performance. The swimming pool will be transformed to a darkened
listening venue, the pool radiating soft light and the sound is split
into two separate systems. The invited artists are:
PIERRE HENRY,
NURSE WITH WOUND,
MIRA CALIX & ANDREA PARKER,
ERIC LA CASA, ADRIAN
MOORE,
CHEAPMACHINES,
SIMON WHETHAM,
RYAN STYLES,
GRAHAM BOWERS,
CHAPPARAL ANDREW HODGES,
ANDREW LEWIS,
MEGAN BROADMEADOW,
JOEL
CAHEN
and DAWNS i BAWB
For the London date,
Newtoy has commissioned the electronic music pioneer and accomplice to
the the first Musique Concréte compositions, PIERRE HENRY to
create new work for the dual soundsystem. The work 'Analogy' will have
its world premiere on the 6th March 2011 in London's York Hall Pool in
Bethnal Green.
Book early to avoid disappointment as pool capacity is inevitably low.

YES, you read right: this is a gig in a swimming pool WITH THE WATER STILL IN IT.
And if that isn’t enough or you don’t feel like dipping a toe in to the pool then…..
SOUNDSOUP
returns to London’s Resonance 104.4FM for a second season of shows.
First broadcast this coming 10th January at 11pm and then every Monday
thereafter until mid Springtime. Joel Cahen plays an hour of live
continuous sound collages and mash ups, undulating between harmonies
and dissonances, order and cacophony… actually no order.
Previous shows from the last 5 years - Soundsoup season 1, The Mash Up,
and The Saturday Night Mash Up - all available for listening
on www.newtoy.org/soundsoup
The show can be heard worldwide, on line, via www.resonancefm.com
AND FINALLY…
A HISTORY OF SOUND ART: AUDIO PIECE WITH ACCOMPANYING SHOWS…
A
History Of Sound Art is an 80min audio retrospective, composed and
arranged by J Milo Taylor and mixed by Joel Cahen, an audio
retrospective that weaves through different sound works throughout
the century with narratives and ideas from some of the prominent
artists in the field. It is an insightful sound collage retrospective
into the craft of sound and its development as an artistic practice,
from Edison's first sound film in 1895 to today. Short excerpt from the
20s period here
