Thing of the Day
AFRICANTAPE HAVE A COMPILATION SAMPLE ALBUM LOADED WITH GOODIES JUST WAITING FOR YOU….
February 15th 2011
Africantape, are a label from France
- well, we think they’re from France, it says Uganda on their website
today – ok, from Africa somewhere, or western Europe, some place
somewhere. Whoever they are and wherever they’re from, they’re a
consistently good label who’ve been getting a lot of well-deserved
attention around here in recent times. And Africantape have a free download compilation album available and waiting for your curiosity to get the better of you.
Nineteen
tracks, all of a leftfield/ experimental, other-rock nature - bits of
artprog, bits of math-like rock, slices of 90’s Chicago noise in the
shape of Big’n, the lush sound of New York’s Extra Life (although the track on here, Voluptuous Life, is more on their frantic side tha nthier lush side), slices of slinty alt.rock in the form of Ventura… Chevreuil’s slightly Battles-like Breakdance is brilliant, as is the beautifully edgy angular gliding and graceful (almost) instrumental hard-edged obtuseness of Io Monade Stanca (dare we mention that hint of Cardiacs we can hear in there?). Oh look there’s loads of good stuff on here; Oxes, The Conformists, Papaye, Tormenta – another lean math-type instrumental outfit who are far better then their name would have you believe, The Conformists
start the whole thing off with a a slice of shouty claustrophobia and
demands that you get with the programme and “why is it so hard?” The
whole thing demands your time, Ned’s track Bigger Penises, is rather intriguing as it sits there with a can of Bud and a gun singing about churches. Sheik Anorak are...well… rather gracefully different in their slowly building minimal way, Aucan
have an expansive post-rock flavoured electronic glow, actually none of
these bands safely fit in to any convenient pigeonhole, these words are
just vague signposts in general directions. Loads to explore here and
all there for you to download for free. It's all connected with
Africantape Festival 2011, that happens in Lyon at the end of April…

And while we’re here and in a space where music twists off at healthy kind of obtuse post-hardcore angles…
CAPSULE
have more of their over the top high-speed mathy post hardcore
onslaught ready to go. The US three piece band have a new track, Neuralize So Numb, available now as exhibit A from their new album No Ghost,
the track is over on BrooklynVegan, Indeed if you were paying attention
to your radio last Sunday night you will have heard their one minute
six second outburst on our Resonance FM show. The new album is set for
release on April 12th via Rorschach Records

And finally….
GIGS WILL TEAR US APART AGAIN
- So you know about Organ and the 'zine and the website and the radio
show and you may have caught some of the art shows recently and anyway
some drunken Cutthroat with a pair of scissors started yelling about it
being about time you Organ lot put on some proper gigs again... Well,
we have been doing just that, but in rather strange places... anyway,
what they're talking about is more 'proper' gigs in 'proper' venues
with good bills where things cross-pollinate and audiences are shared
because the bands have something in common and such... the man with the
scissors (or was it a girl with a violin bow?) was right and it is
about time. Now, I calculate that we Organ team have put on 953 gigs in
London (no really, I counted them the other day), all points North,
South and West, loads in the middle, not one in East London, well, not
in conventional venues anyway... so if our 25th Birthday is to coincide
with our 1000th London show we better get our fingers out...
Ok...
time to put on some more gigs, this time in nice wholesome East London
venues that don't have any barfly crap or corporate energy drink logos
all over them.. nice friendly places like the Victoria in Dalston and
such... in conjunction with our friends at LondonGigs and other good
people like the Doubledge team and...
So anyway,
come talk to us about gigs, and whatever else is on your minds. We got
many irons in many fires at the moment, nice big summer all day events,
new printed Organ, great big art show in massive warehouse, instant all
night artshow in a laundry... but none of that right now though, right
now today is about gigs, bands in venues with stages and PAs and come
talk to us about gigs, bills, ideas...
