1/intro:
TRANSISTOR
SIX – Back Yard Rocketship (Blackbean & Placenta) - our adopted
theme tune so you know where you are. Transistor Six is Frances Castle,
there’s lots of her fine art and creativity to explore from Francis so
please please do. You can now get the whole tune downloaded for yourselves
and find links to her artwork, albums and lots more over at www.myspace.com/transistorsix
2: NOSTALGIA 77 feat.
THE FICTION TRIO – My Name Is (Tru Thoughts) – Jazzy piano led instrumental
left-field opening shot for tonight’s show. Yes, that was an Eminem cover
opening things up tonight, from a new compilation full of interesting things
that just landed here this week. Unfolds Presents Tru Thoughts Covers.

3: ONEIDA –
What’s Up Jackal? (Jafjagiwar/Brah) – Oneida have a new triple album on
the way, theIr second rather experimental instalment of their Thank Your
Parents triptych of releases, our of the 13th of July according to sticker
on the back, goes by the name of Rated O. The Brooklyn band are at the
Garage over here in London on August 18th as part of a European tour, the
record label would rather us not tell you any of this though, so we didn’t
alright – www.myspace.com/oneidarocks
or www.enemyhogs.com
4: GAY BEAST – Eeexxxpannndiiinnnggg
(Skin Graft) – “Gay Beast are one of the few bands I’ve seen around
that are seriously challenging the form and content of modern rock music.
Their compositions and execution are ambitious and effective. A truly unique
and weird band” to quote Flying Luttenbacher Weasel Walter. And he’s right.
Gay Beast, “Minnesota’s premier agit-prog queercore band” to quote once
more, this time from the press release (wonder how many agit-prog queercore
bands there are in Minnesota then?), have a new album, Second Wave, out
this month – an urgent album, a precise album, a premeditated clatter of
guitars, keys and pin-point drums flavoured with a dash of electronic psych
and some cutting sax – a significant album, an exciting album, another
thrilliant album – we love doing this Organ thing! - www.myspace.com/gaybeast
or explore Skingraft’s site, there’s a good page of free sample downloads
to get you hooked over there, you really need to buy the whole album though
– www.skingraftrecords.com
5: MICHAEL J SHEEHY
– The Gospel According To Marcelus J Mudd (Glitterhouse) – Mr Sheehy
has yet another fine album on the way, out on July 6th. His sixth album
– is that six solo albums or are we counting his work with Dream City Film
Club here? Whatever the score, every single record the man has ever been
involved in is worth checking out, Michael makes records that matter and
why he isn’t big big news is beyond us. This time some kind of soul-drenched
bad-ass collection of noir-blues and some sort of concept album about boxing
and taking a dive and more of his barroom stories and East End Irishness
and more of that Catholic guilt and ... He’s joined this time by his band
The Hired Mourners. Catch Michael J Sheehy at the Lexington, here in London,
on July 16th, find out more via www.myspace.com/michaeljsheehy
or www.glitterhouse.com
6: ANTI-POP CONSORTIUM
– Apparently (Big Dada) Anti-Pop Conspiracy have a new album
on the way, this is the new single, out on August 10th as a free download
ahead of the album that’s called Fluorescent Black. Apaprently is a slice
of left-field robot-funk flavoured hip-hop rap-crunch lane switching from
outside the machine - www.myspace.com/antipopny
7: INCOMING CEREBRAL OVERDRIVE
– There (Supernatural Cat) - The Italian math-tinged post hardcore
noise band have a new album called Controverso – it isn’t, out until September
28th but hey, an early taste isn’t going to harm anyone... Mastodon style
Meshuggah riffage, hardcore Converge growling and screaming and a touch
Zombie in there with their experimental Italian progisms... www.myspace.com/incomingcerebraloverdrive
or www.supernaturalcat.com
8: ANTHRAX (UK) –
Welcome (Happy Release) – The one and only Anthrax, oh alright, the original
Anthrax, the anarcho punk band Anthrax from back there, the days of Crass
and all that. They’re back, first time in a recording studio for twenty
years so they say – sounding as good as ever to us, and don’t we need some
proper political punk rock with a bit of thought behind it right now. Two
track CD single released on their own Happy Release label – www.myspace.com/anthraxuk
or www.anthraxukoffical.com
9: HORDES OF HEL –
Leave Life Behind (Regain) – Who are Hordes Of Hel? Whole load of names
and faces from the Swedish black/death metal scene who are keeping their
identities to themselves and who, more importantly, pushing the boundaries
of extreme metal. The new album, Bloodskam, is full on black/death metal
delivered with an experimental, sometimes industrial, edge... full on evil
black noise – www.regainrecords.com
or www.myspace.com/heldivine
10: GG ELVIS AND THE TCP
BAND – Suspicious Mind (Mental) – That’s right, never mind no
king of pop, the real king is alive and well and he’s been inhabited by
the spirit of GG Allin! GG Elvis leads an Elvis tribute band, they do it
GG Allin extreme punk rock style and the good news (oh yes, it is good
news!) is that they’re on the way over here for an August UK tout that
includes a date here in London, at the Camden Underworld, on August 5th.
More from www.myspace.com/ggelvis
11: JASON PEGG – Everything
Is Easy (demo) - Jason Pegg, he of Clearlake, has recorded a rather
delicate, rather personal cover of a Cardiacs song. Played again this week
because, as most people now know, Cardiacs leader Tim Smith had a rather
serious heart attack with extra complications, it happened exactly one
year ago this week – the band have been rather quiet about this until this
week, they’ve put a statement up on the Cardiacs.com
page that you can also find on our ORG Records page (with a little bit
from us as well). Contact Jason via www.myspace.com/jasonpeggnoise
– isn’t Cardiacs music a beautiful thing, get well soon Tim, thanks Jason...
12: DJ FOOD – The
Illectrik Hoax (Ninja Tune) – Track from the forthcoming One Man’s Weird
Is Another Man’s World EP that comes out on July 6th. Does is matter who
DJ Food is? And Solid Steel? And Strictly Kev? And crunching left-field
beats and different dance things and...? www.djfood.org
or www.myspace.com/strictlykev
– playing at the Ninja Tune night at the ICA on July 10th
13: FULBORN TEVERSHAM
- Beachtunes (Pickled Egg) – A revisit to the last Fulborn Teversham album
and a track you can find a free downloadable taster on the Pickled Egg
site – www.pickled-egg.co.uk. Played because the Polar Bear offshoot band
are headlining a twelve band Moose Factory free festival thing that runs
from, twelve midday until twelve midnight – it all happens at the George
Tavern, 370 Commercial Road, Stepney, London E5. It happens on July 5th,
full details over at www.myspace.com/moosefactoryuk
14: XBXRX –
F**k Your America (download) – Extreme experimental noise band XBXRX have
a new album, goes by the name of Un Usper and the only place you can get
it is as download from the American band’s website – www.xbxrx.com
– they’ve made it available for free, they are, reasonably enough, asking
for donations though. Weasel Walter, he of Flying Luttenbachers and a whole
bag of interesting bands/projects, played on the album, that has to be
a good sign doesn’t it? WW doesn’t mess around, anything he’s involved
in has to be checked out doesn’t it?
15: POISON IDEA –
Motorhead (Golf) - And why the hell not? A messy road accident of a hardcore
punk rock cover of the old Hawkwind classic that Lemmy took with him when
he finally figured out Bastard wasn’t the best name for his then new band.
You’ll find this on the Early Years album. What are Poison Idea up to this
week? Don’t ask us, new single I think - www.myspace.com/blankblackoutvacant
16: PRE – Haircutticus
(Skin Graft) – Pre have a new album finished and ready to go, the beautifully
noisy thing is called Hope Freaks, once more, the bits we’ve heard, are
a screaming hardboiled screamathon delight. You can download this very
track for free and get an early taste of the album via www.skingraftrecords.com
17: ARAB ON RADAR
– No3 (Skin Graft) – And while you’re checking out that new Pre track,
grab yourself a healthy slice of one of the most challenging bands in the
world. This is a track from the Soak The Saddle album that you can also
download for free from the excellent www.skingraftrecords.com
website... they have loads of hardboiled avant goodness and challenging
noisefests over there at Skin Graft...
18: CURSIVE – Donkeys
(Saddle Creek) – Cursive have a rather impressive new album out, another
collection of left field thoughtful alternative post-hardcore whatever
you want to call it... Cursive have something a little different,
something a little extra to explore, a little more thought and crafted
challenge than your average rock band. The latest album is called Mama,
I’m Swollen – an album as good as any they’ve made... consistently good...
a
treasure island of reality, something with a little more depth, and how
much do we need a little more depth right now – www.saddle-creek.com
or www.cursivearmy.com or www.myspace.com/cursive
19: J.VIEWZ feat NOA LEMBERSKY
– Smooth Criminal (Tru Thoughts) – Last track tonight and another track
from that Tru Thoughts Covers album we opened up with tonight. A rather
jazzy drum ‘n bass flavoured left field version of Smooth Criminal. We
made it all the way through the show without mentioning Michael Jackson,
Glastonbury or anything else that’s been jamming up the media for the last
few days, although it was tempting to play Strangulated Beatoffs’ The King
Of Pop Has Burst. Tonight’s show was dedicated to Sky Saxon, the legendary
leader of The Seeds, a real king of pop, who past away this week...
Next week Marina will be
in the chair once more with her OTHER ROCK SHOW and the continued exploration
of rock that goes beyond the convention on mere 4/4 time |
